Scholars Without Borders repaired and restarted a solar-powered desalination plant in Khan Younis, southern Gaza. Technical faults in the pumping system and desalination unit were fixed over 15 days, from 10 to 25 January 2026. The plant now supplies safe drinking water to 3,500 people per day. It serves displaced and affected families living in displacement camps across Gaza.
Crews replaced damaged membranes, pumps and filtration units and coordinated with local suppliers for spare parts under access restrictions. The plant runs on solar power to keep operating through electricity outages. Operating hours were reorganized to raise output and meet demand. The project cost $8,000.
